This month, I’ve been focusing on texture work. The best way for me to do so was to model objects that could easily be modeled and UV’d within 20 minutes, so I focused on barrels mainly because they’re glorified cylinders. So I threw together 3 different types of barrels and threw on some base diffuse maps. The one on the left is a wooden barrel with gold rings, the middle is a plastic blue rain bucket, and the right one is an oil drum.
The rain barrel was about 50% hand painted and 50% photo, the oil drum was nearly 100% photo sourced. Originally, as shown in the first picture, the wooden barrel was about 50/50 too. Upon receiving a critique about the hand painted portions of the barrel, I was advised to make it 100% hand painted. So, I went back and did just that, I also added a normal map and spec map to it. Images 2 and 3 are the renewed images. #2 is a screen grab straight out of Maya and #3 is a mental ray render. The last two maps are the diffuse and spec. For now, I believe I will continue to further my skills with hand painted textures. More objects to come soon.
